The thermal pulse decay technique for measuring ultrasonic absorption coefficients
نویسنده
چکیده
The classic method for measuring absorption coefficients ofmaterials requires adetermination of the temperature rise within a medium during ultrasonic irradiation. Serious errors may result from a viscous heating effect around the required thermocouple probe, and from heat lost by conduction to surrounding, cooler egions. A thermal pulse-decay technique is proposed and evaluated which allows for the separation, intime and space, of the viscous heating artifact and the true absorptive heating of a medium. In addition, the pulse-decay method explicitly accounts for heat conduction and the ultrasonic beam patterns used in experiments. The inherent advantages of the new technique allow for an extension of absorption measurements osmaller beamwidths and higher frequencies and intensities than were previously possible.

متن کاملUltrasonic Attenuation Measurement Using Backsgattering Technique
Ultrasonic backscattering measurements by means of spatial averaging technique were carried out in steel to determine the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient. The attenuation coefficients were evaluated from the exponential decay of the backscattering signal. The results were compared with those obtained by evaluating the amplitude decay of the main pulse. Good agreement is observed provided the...
متن کاملEffects of heat conduction and sample size on ultrasonic absorption measurements.
The absorption coefficient of a material can be determined by measuring the heating which occurs as a result of ultrasonic irradiation. When narrow focused beams are used to heat a sample, or when the available volume of a material is restricted to small dimensions, then the effect of heat conduction to surrounding unheated regions becomes significant, complicating the relation between measured...

In the present study, analytical solutions are obtained for two-dimensional advection dispersion equation for conservative solute transport in a semi-infinite heterogeneous porous medium with pulse type input point source of uniform nature. The change in dispersion parameter due to heterogeneity is considered as linear multiple of spatially dependent function and seepage velocity whereas seepag...
متن کاملThermal properties of borate crystals for high power optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification.
The potential of borate crystals, BBO, LBO and BiBO, for high average power scaling of optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers is investigated. Up-to-date measurements of the absorption coefficients at 515 nm and the thermal conductivities are presented. The measured absorption coefficients are a factor of 10-100 lower than reported by the literature for BBO and LBO. For BBO, a large variat...
